On October 29, 2023, the Archivum welcomed students from Central European University’s Department of Historical Studies, the History in the Public Sphere (HIPS) Program, and the Museum Studies Program for an in-depth visit to our institution. Since CEU’s relocation to Vienna, the Archivum has regularly hosted students in Budapest, offering hands-on experiences with archival materials and insights into the broad selection of services and resources available. This visit gave students a valuable opportunity to engage directly with the Archivum’s collections, exploring their potential for academic and public history projects.

Prof. István Rév, Director of the Archivum, opened the event with a presentation on the history and mission of the University and the Archivum. Chief Archivist Csaba Szilágyi followed with a presentation highlighting the innovative ways archival materials are made accessible through curated collections, thematic websites, exhibitions, and more. His presentation underscored the Archivum’s depth and versatility and demonstrated the support it offers for a diverse range of research initiatives.

After the presentations, Csaba Szilágyi and Archivist Mark László-Herbert led students on tours of the building and the archival repository. These tours offered an inside look at collections relevant to the students’ research interests and gave insights into the processes of acquiring, preserving, and organizing archival materials. Through this hands-on experience, students gained a deeper understanding of archival practices and the potential resources available to support their studies.

To conclude the day, students participated in a practical workshop led by Mark and Senior Audiovisual Archivist Zsuzsa Zádori exploring the catalog, and familiarizing themselves with the broad range of holdings, from textual documents to audiovisual resources, and learning about our online services.
