Research Room

The Archivum is an open-access facility committed to making materials available to researchers and the wider public free of charge. Our Research Room is freely accessible to the public and offers a friendly environment for quiet study.


SUMMER OPENING HOURS:

  • From July 1 to August 2 the research room will close at 2 pm on Fridays.
  • Between August 5 and August 30, the research room will be closed.
  • We open again with standard opening hours on September 2.

To be able to use the Research Room and our online services, please register here. Registration is free and is open to anyone without restrictions.

  • Saturday–Sunday: Closed


Location and Booking

The Research Room is on the 1st floor of the Archivum, at Arany János u. 32, 1051 Budapest, Hungary.

Reservation is mandatory at: https://www.archivum.org/collections/research-room-booking

2x2-hour slots can be booked for maximum twelve researchers per day.

Practical information

In the Research Room we provide free Wi-Fi and equipment, including computer work stations, a microform reader, and a photo stand.

Furthermore, on-site researchers have access to external resources, such as

  • e-journals and e-books, databases subscribed to by the CEU Library, including the University of Southern California Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive;
  • the Hungarian National Audiovisual Archives (NAVA);
  • over one million digitized pages of the Electronic Archives of the Communist International (Comintern)

Researchers are welcome to bring their own notebooks, laptops, USB flash drives, cameras, and portable scanners. Mobile phones should only be used in silent mode.

For storing your personal belongings, we provide lockers in the reception area, which work with a HUF 100 coin deposit. Please note that no food and drink is allowed in the Research Room. The entire building is non-smoking.

Before visiting, we recommend that researchers gain an overview of our collections, explore the Catalog, as well as read our Access, and Privacy Policies.

Researchers may also be interested in our Online Collections that can be accessed through our Catalog, or our thematic Curated Collections that are available without registration. In addition, we also listed and described all our Audiovisual Collections.

Warning: Any form of unprofessional behavior in the Research Room, including watching inappropriate content on the computers, results in immediate and irrevocable banning from the premises of the Archivum.
