Research Description
This project investigates emerging politics of memory present in Polish samizdat post stamps from the 1980s. Which historical figures are they portraying as heroes? What events from the past are commemorated? What historical parallels are made? The research will include conducting visual analysis of the post stamp collection, describing the strategies used by the designers, putting them in the context of the debates among the opposition, and comparing them to the official memory politics of the time. Moreover, it will reflect on the question, to what extent can one see the influence of the historical canon created by the Polish underground in the current Polish memory politics and the ongoing debates?
Bio
Julia Golachowska is a doctoral student at the Jagiellonian University and visual artist based in Warsaw. Her research and artistic practice deal with Polish national identity and politics of memory, focusing on anti-Semitism and Jewish heritage. Her texts have been published in Res Publica Nova, Codziennik Feministyczny, and Wysokie Obcasy. Member of Kolektyw Łaski (together with Jagoda Kwiatkowska and Anna Shimomura), a feminist art collective.
